DC's Right to Marry

As a brand new resident of the District of Columbia, I'm so proud to say that gay marriage is now legal in my city. Beginning today, marriage licenses are being issued to all couples, regardless of orientation. I would go down to the courthouse to watch the joy (and inevitable protest drown-out) in person, but I think I might get too weepy. So from another corner of town, I'm sending my love to that big line of committed couples, whose world is a lot more just today.

Congratulations!

I'm so happy for this! The pics you posted made me tear up a little. Can't wait to live in a city where gay marriage is legal.

I'm so excited too! Go DC! And even Maryland made a little progress by finally recognizing other states' marriages.. I'm sure I would cry too.

the joy on the faces says it all!

as a point of interest: the first photo--from connecticut--appears to also show mary bonauto (to the right of the couple). mary is the tireless GLAD attorney who prevailed in both the vermont and massachusetts marriage equality cases (baker and goodrich, respectively). although i am grateful i already have the right to marry, victories like today (and sadly, even losses like the one we experienced in maine last november) always serve as a reminder of why i became a lawyer. i've had the privilege of consulting with mary on a couple of cases and her partner was one of my favourite law school professors; she is as wonderful as you would expect.

so cheers to the newly married couples in DC and cheers to all the folks who work so tirelessly to continue to work toward civil rights for all!

Bravo DC! A small step in the right direction for social equality. I look forward to the day when we ALL live in a city in which gay couples are free to marry.
